5 November 2011 - Heat Race Day

Race 4 and the championship is getting tougher and tougher. With so many boats in a class taking a win is really tough and I take my hat off to those guys who managed to take multiple wins in a day.

F1 7.5

Wennie decided the water was too rough for his boat and withdrew which left Andy and Neill fighting it out. First heat both ran great until Neill overcooked it down the straight and was out. Andy only had to finish his lap to take last man standing.
Heat 2 it was Andy’s turn to fall out (still in milling) and Neil only had to do the first lap to get last man standing. I hope next race Grant will have his boat there also and Wennie so that at least 4 boats can run in this class. Otherwise I’m sad to say we are not going to see any growth in this class. And it could be such a good class and tight racing.

Offshore sport

Well the same 4 amigos are fighting it out again. Neill and Andy has made it a point to try and take some points away from Tristan to keep him from running away with the championship.
Heat 1 and Neill was off to a flying start With Tristan right behind him. Andy following third. Adam unfortunately falling out in milling. Then not long after Tristan fell out leaving Neill and Andy to fight it out. Neill was leading strong until he missed buoy 2 and Andy took the lead. Neill tried to chase him down but Andy took the win.

Heat 2 and again Adam and Tristan falls out but this time Andy also falls out and Neill wins on a last man standing.
Heat 3 Neill takes the lead and leads the race right up to the last lap when a carb screw comes undone and the carb shuts off, This handed Andy the win with Tristan 1 lap down in second.

Heat 4 was again a case of everyone except Neill falling out handing him the win on a last man standing.

Neill takes the day with a strong 1125 points cutting Tristan’s lead to only 400 points in the championship. The next few races is going to be exciting especially now that we have another Thundercat joining the class. Hopefully Wennie will have his boat running by January which would mean this class would have 6 Nitro boats and Gerald’s general electric. And who knows maybe even I might fire up Miss Alexia again and it would be 7 Nitro boats. On the short course that would make for some fun racing.

F1 Gas

With this class  still finding their feet it is a case that once all boats are on the hot-pit do we know the race will happen.

Heat 1 and all three boats were on the water and running consistent but it was Shaun who showed that he has this F1 gas sorted and could calmly show the other 2 around the course. Tiekie and Grant still finding out how their boats handle with the new outboard leg.
Heat 2 and after some nice racing between Shaun and Grant, Shaun had a dive down the main straight and popped up right in front of Grant. This took them both out leaving Tiekie with the last man standing.

Heat 3 Shaun was still out with his broken boat and Grant and Tiekie took to the water but as Grant was milling his cable snapped (repercussions from the collision with Shaun) and again Tiekie took a last man standing win.

Heat 4 Shaun and Tiekie came down to the start line together and for 15 laps it was a cat and mouse game who would open up first as the water was getting rough. Tip toe around 1 2 3 and then open up on 4 and 5 on lap 15 Shaun over cooked it on 4 allowing Tiekie to capitalize and take a well deserved win.
Day end with Tiekie taking a good win and grabbing some points back from Shaun.

Gas Stock V

Well in the endurance race we saw Gerald’s Faluga is going to be strong.

Heat 1 Gerald continued where he left off in the endurance stamping his mark on the stock V class.  Mark running strong and keeping Gerald on his toes. With 9 boats in the class the racing was always going to be tight and soon guys started falling out fast. Gerald and Mark kept at it for 15 laps managing to lap Shaun and Godfrey 2 in the race.

Heat 2 and Gerald again go to the front, but this time it was Vossie and Shaun chasing him. Vossie riding very conservative trying to stay up right and finish a race. Godfrey and John had a coming together with Godfrey driving right over John’s vector. Gerald wins with Vossie and Shaun 1 lap behind.

Heat 3 and in the milling Godfrey breaks a steering servo and ends up in the firing line of the oncoming boats. Gerald unfortunately hits Godfrey taking him out. John this time got his Vector by the throat and was going to ring his neck if he does not finish a race. Vossie chasing him down was trying his best to try and win. But it was John who took the race win breaking his 6 DNF run of bad luck. Vossie second and Shaun (Mr. Consistent) third.

Heat 4 and Mark was out to win. Racing hard in the worsening conditions and controlling his boat he managed to hold off  Deon and take a well deserved win. Deon second and (yes you guessed it) Shaun third.

Deon takes the day and edges closer to championship leader Shaun. With only 1800 point covering the first 5 places this is going to be a tight one.

Gas Stock Cats

10 Boats Yes 10 Boats. There is nearly not enough water for all of them to race on.

Heat 1 watching 7 of the 10 boats lining up for the start I really thought it was going to be complete carnage at buoy 1. But the guys raced neat and the fighting for first place went on all the way to buoy 4 before Geoff came out in front. I saw boats literally climbing over each other trying to get to the front.
Geoff  (as soon as he had open water) could dictate the pace and this he did masterly keeping a good main straight lead over the following pack. Shaun and Grant tried to chase Geoff down but with them fighting to keep places they could not keep to Geoff’s pace. Andy also running strong kept at it and only allowed himself to be lapped once. New comer Tristan managing a good 5th.

Heat 1 Geoff wins convincingly

Heat 2 and Geoff again took the lead with Mark and Grant chasing him down. A missed buoy and “circling” sees Geoff move down to third and Mark fighting hard to keep Grant behind him.

Mark wins the race (although Geoff still feels that the guys are to harsh on him) Grant second Geoff third and Tristan 3rd
Heat 3 and the best heat of the day with 6 boats finishing. Geoff again taking the lead and showing when left alone he can run as hard as he needs too to dictate the pace to the other guys. Grant battled hard fending of Shaun who in turn had to fight off Clive chasing him down.  Kurt running a bit off pace came in at 5ht with Tristan 6th a lap behind him.

Heat 4 and all carnage breaks loose with 7 of the 10 runners floating on the water. The 3 remaining boats had to navigate their way around all the floating boats. On the start Geoff jumped but managed to make up the ground and come in second behind Ivan. Kurt battling a bit with the bad weather managed to stay running and finished in 3rd.

Geoff takes the day with Grant second and (after a mishap, Cobus announced Mark 3rd)  Shaun actually came third.

SORRY MARK (was actually Gerald’s fault but don’t tell him)

Gas Mods

With 3 v-hulls and 5 cats it was going to be an interesting race.
Heat 1 and John stops with a sick motor. Grant manages to dive the lazer until you could not see it any more (I think it came back up with a made in china sticker underneath) and Tiekie also fell out (still can not remember why) SO it was the cats who had the water for the first race. And after Geoff and Carl went out it was Ivan who took the lead with Clive and Shaun chasing hard. But Ivan kept his cool and took a good first win in the mod class.
Heat 2 and the v-hull boys were ready for a fight. Grant and Tiekie quickly got in to their usual rhythm and handled the worsening weather great and at blistering speeds. Carl was the lone cat staying well out of the missiles on the water.

Heat 2 Grant wins with Tiekie not far behind.

Heat 3 and it was starting to become the Grant and Tiekie show again. Neither giving an inch and fighting hard to stay ahead of the other. Ivan a Clive ran strong but could just not maintain the 2 v-hulls speed. And ended up a lap down at the end of the race.
By know Tiekie was not a happy man as it was 2 – 0 for Grant.

Heat 4 and Tiekie was not going to let Grant take another win. After 12 laps Tiekie was leading hard with Grant not letting him get away. But at lap 13 Grant while trying to over take him from 4 – 5 he got into Tiekie’s prop wash and got flicked over.
Tiekie takes the win with Clive in second.

Tiekie takes the day with Grant second and Clive third.

On Saturday we had 36 boats and if all the boats come to play then we should have would have 43 boats at a race day. Man I can not wait for that to happen. More boats than in all my racing (nationals included) years.

See you guys at the next race day.

3 September 2011 - Heat Race Day
With all the classes present racing could only be great.

F1 7.5

First up was F1 7.5 and it was clear that with the step up from 3.5cc some guys were still trying to find their feet. Grant having rebuilt his boat for the new season had some gremlins and could not make it further than buoy 1. Wennie sporting his 3.5 hull with the 7.5 setup on seemed to run good but tuning gremlins and a loose header stopped him short from taking points. Andy after some good practicing in the off season had a boat that just would not work with him and also could only manage a few laps before stopping on the water.
Neill with a brand new setup managed to keep his boat running strong enough to take the first 3 heats and secure some good points to start the season off.

Rigger 3.5

Wennie managed to get Grant’s rigger to run sweet and the 2 of them had some fun chasing each other around the oval. It is always amazing to see the speeds these little riggers run.

Offshore sport

Well with the new course now sorted it is clear that racing in this class will always be tight.
Form heat 1 to 4 it was Neill and Tristan who was fighting for the win. Adam and Andy having problems with tuning were battling to keep up and only in heat 3 did Adam manage to put in some descent running and take a second place. Neill and Tristan were fighting so hard that at one stage they had a coming together. Tristan’s TC came off worst with a hole in the side but some silver tape given by Neill quickly had the hole patched to resume racing in the following heats.
Gerald sported an electric persuite which seemed to run great but as with the practice days keeps on melting the solder off the connectors. Speed is on par with the Nitro boats and who knows maybe this could be come a new class. Gerald has indicated that there are still lots of speed in the boat. It was later determined that the plugs he was using is only rated to 80 amps and that at stages his motor is pulling more than that. New plugs have been ordered.
The day ended with Tristan taking his second win in this season and it is clear that the rest of the guys need to start working hard to pull back some points. Neill was second with Adam 3rd.
Wennie has indicated that he will be building a offshore port and hopes to have it running by next race day.

Gas stock V

The class is growing and had 8 boats for the day. The duo of Shaun and Mark Gulliver has their boats well and truly setup and showed the rest the way around the course. Deon slowly but surely is coming to grips with his new boat and it is clear that soon he will be fighting for the top honors. Gerald after some more tinkering is getting the hang of the Faluga and I am sure in races to come he will be featuring strong.

Godfrey with old faithful is managing to run stronger and stronger and where in the past he would be lapped 2 or 3 times he is now in most cases on the same laps as the winner. Wally (welcome back) also showed that when his equipment is right he is capable of winning races and in heat 3 did that neatly.

Mark after started the race day off strong with 2 wins and after a coming together with Gerald in the third heat managed to impale buoy5 in the last heat.
But is was Shaun who kept his cool and for the second race day managed to take home more than a 1000 points and in this way stretch his lead in the Stock V class.

Gas stock Cats

This class is at the point of exploding. With 7 boats taking part it was clear going to be a tough day. Heat 1 Geoff planted his Ascari in front and dictated the pace after Andy managed to park his Terminator squarely in buoy1. Grant and Mark fought over second and third after most of the others fell out.
The second heat was Clive’s followed by Shaun and Andy (running the best I’ve seen his cat run).

Heat 3 it was Shaun’s turn to take the win with Geoff and Ivan behind him. Mark an Clive brought up the rear. Clive having lead until he missed a buoy.
The final heat Clive was back up to the front and at the pace he is running it is going to be hard to beat him if he does not make a mistake. He managed to end a lap ahead of everyone with Mark again getting some good points in second.

Geoff had a spectacular spill between 3 and 4 putting him out the race.
Clive took the day but only 200 point was between 1st and 3rd. the championship is so tight that between 1st and 5th there is only 930 points and that is made up in one race day.

Gas Modifieds

This class has a had a resurgence in numbers with no less than 8 boats in the class and when John is back that would be 9. Eina pain.
With 3 cats and 5 V’s it was clear that racing was going to be tight and that it was.
Tiekie was up to his usual self leading the pack with the rest chasing him down. But at these speeds you need to keep a cool head and soon most of the field were floating with Grant chasing down Tiekie and Clive running strong but not up to the pace of the v-hulls.
Second heat and Grant this time lead the pack With Geoff chasing him down. Clive again stayed away from all the carnage and managed to keep the cat upright and take 3rd.
Heat 3 and Tiekie was back to leading the pack and Grant chasing him hard. This time Nick managed to keep it upright and take a respectable third Clive taking 4th al be it 3 laps behind.
Last heat and Tiekie falls out and Grant takes a easy win with Clive fending off Ivan for second place.
This meant that at final results Grant 1st Clive 2nd and Tiekie 3rd . The new guys to this class have shown that they can run as strong and once they can keep the boats upright this class will have some tight racing.

See you guys at the next race day.

6 August 2011 - Heat Racing

Well our third season at CMBC is well and truly now on the go.

2 weeks back we had the first leg of the endurance championship and although the turnout was low due to guys working and still building boats it was still some great racing.

After the first leg the results is
Mark 136 laps in stock V
Clive 124 laps in stock cats
Grant 115 laps in Mod

But with laps and not points counting towards the championship it is still fair game as the guys in second and third are close in lap count.

Saturday saw the all classes except Rigger and F1 7.5 take part in the days proceedings
You would not have said we had an of period if you look at the ferocity with which guys started racing again. Running 4 heats was going to be tricky but with the 2 classes not running time was not rushed.

Offshore sport
As last year most heats were becoming boring with boats just circling to finish races, we deiced to spice it up and give the Offshore sport a new shorter (although not by much) course. By placing a new buoy it has made the course much tighter and now the throttle finger will get some work in a race.
Heat one and new comer Tristan could not believe that with very little run time he had to race 3 seasoned boaters. But timing the start perfect meant that he had the lead and it was up to the others to chase him down. (Thank you uncle Cobus for making me practice this course layout). Well Tristan could not believe his luck when Neill and Adam fell out and Andy still learning the course tried in vane to catch him. So heat 1 to Tristan.
Heat 2 and this time Neill and Andy got a good start followed by Adam and Tristan. But with the tight cornering Neill rolled his boat at buoy 5 and soon after Adam started having tuning problems (later to be found a tune pipe coupling blew). Andy kept the course tight and after some great racing took heat 2 with Tristan a lap down and Adam in third.

Heat 3 and Neill was back to his winning self leading the heat from the start and showing guys that last years great racing was not beginners luck. Adam having sorted his tune pipe raced hard and stayed right behind Neill. Tristan managed third 2 laps down on the leaders.
Heat 4 and Neill again took the lead and dictated the pace keeping the corners tight and managing to lap Adam and Tristan. Neill took a second win for the day and showed that if everything runs right he is a strong competitor in this class.
Day ended with Tristan taking a debut win and showing that with some more practice he can take the fight to the other boaters. Neill second and Adam third on the same points Andy taking 4th after having carb problems in the 3rd and 4th heat.
With the new course the racing is tight and from watching the spectators there is new excitement when this class is running. Hopefully by next race we would have 2 more boats sporting electric motors and it is going to be fun seeing if they can take the fight to the Nitro boats.

Gas Stock V
Well with 2 guys leaving the class and 2 joining it is great to see the class holding at 7 members to start the heats season.
Heat 1 and it looked like mark started where he left off last season running strong in this class. He was chased by Deon (sporting a new Razor 45) and Godfrey after the rest fell out due to mechanical failure or trigger nerves.

Heat 2 and after a good start it was Shaun who took the lead and kept a steady pace holding off the rest. But again new season gremlins set in and soon it was only Shaun and Godfrey running and that is how the heat came to an end.

Heat 3 Shaun again took the lead Deon and John followed. It was not long before John stopped and only Vossie tried to take the fight to Shaun. Godfrey after having a throttle arm close his carb in heat 2 had it sorted and was pushing hard and managed to only let the faster guys lap him once. His best performance to date.

Heat 4 John got his gremlins sorted and had his boat sitting nice in the water Deon again chasing hard in second and Shaun was running hard on  Deon’s heals. Godfrey kept his pace good and again managed 14 laps to the others 15. Just a bit tighter running and he would be fighting for top honors. The heat finished with John leading

Shaun took the day with some good points with Vossie 2nd John 3rd and Godfrey 4th. At this pace the stock V class is going to be a closely run class and I sure next race Mark will be in the thick of things and competing strong.

Gas Stock Cats
Well this class is getting ridicules. Low flying kamikaze pilots taking no prisoners.

With all the boats pretty much on par with each other the starts in this class is critical. And hat a start the first heat had. 5 boats lining up and riding hard to buoy 1 with another 3 right behind them.

But it was Ivan who came out tops with Geoff chasing hard behind him. Squabbling for the bottom positions the rest of the field soon succumbed to the conditions and soon it was just Ivan Geoff and Shaun running. Ivan kept his cool and led the whole race. Geoff settled (for a change) and finished in second, Shaun third.

Second heat it was Geoff that took the lead with Shaun and Mark fighting for second place. Clive was running just behind waiting to pounce if either Shaun or Mark makes a mistake. Andy brought up the rear running slightly off pace. Geoff managed to hold on to the lead and take a well deserved win. Shaun fended off Mark and in the end brought his boat home .7seconds before Mark.

Heat 3 and Shaun got the lead with John hot on his heals. A small gap and Ivan and Mark were running fighting for 3rd place. Geoff jumped the start and had to run hard to try and salvage something of the race. Lap after lap the 2 front runners kept at it with Ivan and Mark fighting hard also. That was until Mark over took Ivan slightly between 2 and 3 and Ivan just could not get his boat to turn on 3 and ran side-on into Mark causing both to fall out.

This allowed Clive to pounce on their mistake and take third. By this time Geoff hard carved his way back into fourth. ON the last lap John tried to dive under Shaun on buoy3 when Shaun had to navigate around floating boats. But On 4 John overshot and Shaun managed to cut back underneath him and out drag him to buoy five and ultimately the win. Great win Shaun well deserved.

Heat 4, Clive got the start sorted and took the lead and dictated the pace from the front. Shaun tried to chase him down but could not catch him. John ran strong in 3rd with Ivan just behind. The heat finished in this order.
Shaun finished 1st for the day on 375 short of full points and with this established a healthy lead in the class with the second place nearly a heat’s wining points behind.

Geoff came in second (his highest results yet in Gas Stock Cats)
Clive a quiet third.

It has become clear in this class you can not slip up or you move down the order fast.

Racing is just going to get tighter and with Grant back next race and 2 more boats being build it is going to get tough.

Gas Modifieds
This class has grown and diminished and grown again and looks like this season is going to be a good one. With 5 boats entered the class is strong and with more boats to join it looks like a good season.

Heat 1 saw I first “Last man standing” applied as every one except Tiekie fell out to new boat gremlins.

Heat 2 and again Tiekie was the last man standing and the heat came to a quick stop. This did not look good for the others and Tiekie was wondering who’s going to bring some competition to him.

Heat 3 Gremlins destroyed John took the lead in his new XXX and kept Tiekie at bay. Geoff running a RCMK powered Zenith kept up to the other 2 and managed to not get lapped although it was his first race run with the new boat. Nick spun out and Ivan had his boat just cut out for no reason. The front 3 finished all on the same lap and I hope this is a show of things to come.

Heat 4 it was Tiekie who took the lead with Nick following and John bringing up the rear. Geoff and Ivan falling out early on. Tiekie dictated the pace and Nick tried to chase him down but these boats are so evenly matched that coming from behind it is hard to overtake the leader.

Tiekie took the day with John 2nd and Nick 3rd. Tiekie taking some strong points and the rest of the field are going to have to pull up their socks or he is going to run away with the class.

F1 Gas
3 boats started the day but after numerous shaft breakages Mark decided to sit out.

Shaun showed some strong pace and it is clear that he is going to be a force  to reckon with. Gerald managed to run strong but lacking a bit in outright pace although his lap times are good.

Hopefully the next race Nick and Tiekie would have sorted their Burger Bone legs and be running strong in this field. Grant should be there with his new boat.
So lets hope 6 boats for next race.
